Director x Cinematographer

Matthew Silalahi

About Me

Matthew Silalahi is a director and cinematographer based out of Fort Collins, Colorado. A lot of people call him Matt. He is a graduate of Colorado State University, having majored in Journalism and Media Communication and minored in Film Studies. As someone in the creative industry, Matt has been involved in many creative teams and projects. His most recent was with the Colorado State University (CSU) Athletics Digital Media Team where he held a position as a Digital Media Intern. His job for CSU Athletics gave him the opportunity to manage social media pages such as @csufutbol and @csuramtennis to be able to help grow their page with creative content and ideas. On top of CSU Athletics, Matt has created work with the CSU Rec Center, creating 3 documentaries called “Love for the Game,” which told the stories of club athletes at CSU. Matt's love of filmmaking is endless. He loves being able to capture every moment he can as those moments are memories to be cherished.

As a director and cinematographer, Matt's skills have been heavily involved within Davinci Resolve — Editing/Color Grading — and Premiere Pro. But along with that, Matt knows how to work within Light Room and Photo Shop having had a background in photography before pursuing a career in filmmaking.

Aside from telling stories, Matt loves hanging out with friends and family. He knows that life is more than just having a camera in your hand. Matt loves playing basketball but also tries to explore the outdoors, believing nature itself is something to be cherished.

At the end of the day, his excitement and joy to tell stories for others are beyond words to describe and he hopes to work with you soon.

One Really Big Goal

As a director and cinematographer, Matt has one big goal! That goal is to create, help, and tell inspiring stories for people wanting to get their stories out to the world. Being in the creative industry for about 6 years now, Matt has learned so much about what it takes to create a compelling story. He’s learned to connect with your clients and to have enough of a solid relationship in which both parties can freely express themselves, with the client being able to unguardedly tell their story, and for me, as the storyteller, to craft their story in a compelling way.

Matt has also learned the creative process takes time. To be able to create a compelling story in photo and video, patience must be attained to achieve the highest quality product. That means knowing that some projects might take days or even weeks to get to where it’s supposed to be. Leonardo Da Vinci didn’t create the Mona Lisa in a day. It took time, it took patience. It takes a strong creative ability to constantly think about the next move, cut, or press of a button of a camera in order to achieve what is intended for the story.

Final Statement

Matt loves what he does because the stories he gets to help tell, inspire him every day. Matt’s desire to help people tell their stories is one he hopes to continue to have a fire inside his heart. Through all the ups and downs so far in his career, the way he sees it is that he has the best job in the world.
